PURPOSE AND APPLICATIONS
OF
3 PHASE
TRANSFORMERS
3 Phase Transformers
are used to adjust 3 phase incoming power to a more desirable 3 phase
outgoing power. In power distribution systems
3 Phase
Step Up Transformers transform power to very high voltages in a 3 phase configuration
in order to eliminate
 as
much power loss as possible while it is transmitted over long distances. The
higher the voltage and the smaller the amperage; the less loss resulting
from resistance is encountered. The size of the lines can be smaller as a
result.
3 phase
power is produced in most energy production systems by virtue of the fact
that these systems use generators which have three evenly spaced coils
passing through a magnetic field. Each of these coils represents one leg of
a 3 phase system, thus the name "3 phase".
Since most
power IS transmitted as 3 phase AC, a 3 Phase Transformer is used to
accept the power from the generators and step it up as a very high voltage
current carried over three individual high power lines. The three lines
allow this system to carry 173% more power than a 2-line single phase
system.
At later
points in the line voltage will be lowered by

Transformers intended on
delivering correct power to the next step in the process. There may be
several 3 Phase Transformers along the route, adjusting the 3 phase
power to ever lower voltages until at last either ending where single stage
circuits are split off, or where there is use of 3 phase power applications.
Large
motors, large computer installations, air conditioning and heating
installations, CNC mills, all often use 3 phase power to great advantage.
Motors run smoother, cooler and more efficiently. In many instances 3 phase
power is also cheaper. Motors that are 3 phase can be smaller and yet more
efficient and powerful than single phase motors.
