3 Phase Transformers
Used to set voltages in all 3 phase
applications where a 3 phase power supply exists.
3 Phase Converters
Convert single phase to 3 phase power when 3 phase is most desirable.
Medical Isolation Transformers
Necessary for any hospital and medical
equipment covered by state and federal safety and performance regulations.
Isolation Transformers
Separates the incoming power from that
which finally runs the equipment. Protects against unwanted characteristics
generated in the use of power within an area.
Buck Boost Transformers
Often used for low voltage applications
and raising voltage for 230V motors or 120V lighting systems;
designed to reduce (buck) or
raise (boost) line voltage from 5% to 20%.
Custom Transformers
Specific needs can be filled by custom
building a transformer to the requirements of the customer.
Step Down Transformers
Adjust voltage from high voltage
transmission lines or to correct local lines for chronically high voltage
conditions.
Step Up Transformers
Adjust voltage for transmission at higher
voltages or to correct local lines for chronically low voltages.
AC Line Reactors
Adjust, block or otherwise handle
unwanted power characteristics often generated during normal use of power in
an area.
Acme Transformers
A reliable leading American transformer
distributing company.
Hammond Transformers
Originated as a family -owned and run
company and is now a nation-wide distributor!
Jefferson Transformers
In business over 93 years; supplying a
diverse selection of products to an equally diverse clientele. |
PURPOSE AND APPLICATIONS
OF
AC LINE
REACTORS
AC Line Reactors
act as a buffer and provide some protection against spikes in voltage, can
act against transient harmonics which alter the sinusoidal wave pattern
desirable for normal AC operations, help correct low inductance loads when
using certain motors or combinations of motors, and can work in combination
with damping resistors to combat a reflected wave voltage spike.
AC Line Reactors
are essentially an
inductor made up of coiled wire often surrounding an iron core to
concentrate the magnetic lines. When an AC Line Reactor is powered up
it has an inertia wherein the existing power stored in the magnetic field
surrounding the coils of windings tend to resist changes. Therefore, an
incoming spike or change of characteristic will tend to be reduced and
lengthened out so the effects will be more mild. Such changes are listed
above. When the current is DC the effect will be to lengthen out the rate of
change and cause any instantaneous changes in voltage to be reflected in a
slow increase or decrease in current.
Harmonics refers to the
fact that certain loads, like "six pulse" drives will only draw current at
the plus and minus peaks of the line. This makes the wave form as much as
85% distorted when a 3-phase input converter is used (to convert AC to DC)
along with six SCRs or six diodes with a filter capacitor bank. By inserting
an AC Line Reactor, thus reducing the amplification and lengthening
out the wave, the form can be corrected to as little as 35% distortion. This
tends to help also in that DC filter capacitors in use can be smaller, heat
up less and last longer.
Side effects of AC Line Reactors can
include losses in power due to resistance, eddy current losses when the
AC Line Reactor has a metal core (due to losses in the changing magnetic field
and magnetic realignment in the iron molecules),
heating, reduced efficiency, along with increased space requirements, added
weight and cost.
Sometimes there is an unwanted synergistic
relationship between parts in a line. Stray cable capacitance and other
parts such as power correction capacitors can interact with an AC Line
Reactor resulting in a resonance.
However, despite these cons, the benefits of a
properly installed AC Line Reactor as given at the beginning more than
make up for them. These are mentioned here as the user must anticipate when
constructing his system that mediating these less desirable effects will
have to be included in the planning stages.
