PURPOSE AND APPLICATIONS
OF ISOLATION TRANSFORMERS
Isolation Transformers
make it possible for AC current or signals to traverse from one device to
another without actually being linked. The primary and secondary windings of
an isolation transformer are kept physically separate.
 Isolation Transformers
separate one circuit from another
in order to have a "clean" current or
signal arrive
at the final stage. Because
they are constructed as
they are, Isolation Transformers allow AC signals to pass while
blocking DC signals and Interference caused by ground loops. Symmetrical
windings are most often used; allowing the AC current to retain its current
and voltage characteristics while
accomplishing the desired protective functions.
Isolation
Transformers that are shielded are more desirable for use for power
supplies for sensitive electronics and critical equipment. The shielding is
usually metal or aluminum and is placed between the primary and secondary
windings. It is also grounded. Shielded Isolation Transformers block
surges and other phenomena while static and locally induced currents are
drained off. This protects personnel and electronic equipment from
undesirable ambient power conditions often occurring due to normal use and
interactions of electrical activity within an area.
Placing a
series of two or more Isolation Transformers between the power source and
the load dramatically improves the quality of the power. This is referred to
as "cascading".
Isolation
Transformers are a major group that includes as a sub group
Medical Isolation Transformers.
These differ as they are highly regulated by government safety and quality
